There′s a girl that I used to know
But I don't know where she′s been
And all I remember nowIs she smelled like apples and cinnamon
And I wonder if she thinks of me
And are her thoughts harsh or kind?
Does she miss the man that I used to be
Or is she glad that she left me behind?

Time is a cruel mistress
There ain't no slowing her down
She's taken the ones you loved
And things you thought would always be around
Like my dear old grandfather
Burned to bits and buried in the ground
Used to tell me tales of wonder
But now he don′t, he don′t make a sound

Whatever happened
To the house I grew up in?
It's covered in dust and turned to rust
There′s no trace of all my things
There's an empty space in the corner
Where my bed used to be
Oh I should have known this fleeting life
Would fade away from me

My memories are the map
Of the places that I′ve seen
And the people that I've met and called
My friends or family
And I hope to God I pray
As I age they will hold
You know my grandmother by her dying day, well
She′d lost them all

So that girl that I used to know
But I don't know where she's been
Oh yes that one who smelled
Just like apples and cinnamon
Well I often think of her
And my thoughts they′re always kind
And I miss all that she meant to me, and I wish
She was back here by my side
